Shen Yi Dong began his artistic journey when he studied oil painting in the Xi’an Art Academy from 1986 to 1987. In 1992, he later graduated from SuZhou Industrial Art Academy where he honed his skills, and began teaching at the same academy from 1994 to 1996. After which he made a name for himself as a professional painter and had a great number of works sought out by both inbound and outbound collectors.
The majority of his oil paintings show the picturesque depictions of rural landscapes, and also the quaint charms of rural village life. As well as showing scenes from his beautiful motherland China, he is also known to have made artistic expeditions to neighbouring countries near Turkey and Mongolia, which have inevitably broadened his horizons through engaging in a different culture, and creative expertise. His paintings, “The Spring in Yurt” and “Joy in the Golden Autumn” show rural women of Turkic descent, engaging in their daily activities. A traditional yurt is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by several distinct nomadic groups in the steppes of Central Asia.
His first live exhibition, titled “Ties of Love to River Town" took place in 1997, and was the beginning of many exhibitions. Some to name are his work “Staring” which was exhibited in the Shanghai Art Exposition 1999, his work “Pleasantly cool wind in the summer” which was shown at a Shanghai charity auction. He has had solo exhibitions in the Shanghai Gezhi Gallery (2002), Shanghai Linfeng Gallery (2004) and finally, made his first debut solo exhibition which took place in Singapore, in 2008.
